A total of 1,200 abandoned and neglected vehicles parked on various streets in the emirate have been seized by the Ajman Municipality since the beginning of this year, as compared to 3,000 such vehicles confiscated during the same period in 2017.
The crackdown was undertaken as part of the municipality's strategy to safeguard the aesthetic appeal of the emirate.
The inspections were carried out to combat all kinds of practices that sully the clean view of the city, said Khalid Al Hosani, director of Health and Environment Department at Ajman Municipality.
Al Hosani added that the inspection team found as many as 1,200 vehicles left without number plates and some of them neglected on streets for many days. The inspectors pasted warning stickers on the abandoned vehicles for their owners to remove them within a short period of time, but no one heeded to municipality's warning.
He said that the inspections will continue until vehicle-owners fall in line. Motorists should not to leave their cars in public places without permission or leave them for long periods without cleaning, he pointed out. "The dusty cars on roads tarnish the aesthetic image of the city and can turn into dens for criminals to carry out illegal activities."
He added that the municipality is also keen to sensitise residents on the importance of safe and healthy living in the emirate. "The abandoned vehicles near homes, industrial areas and public streets do not only spoil the aesthetic view of the city, but also pollute the environment and affect public health," he said.
The practice of abandoning vehicles has reduced from 3,000 last year to 1,200 this year due to spread of awareness carried out by the municipality and continuous inspection campaign, Al Hosani revealed. However, a lot needed to be done, he added.
