Movember, an event that highlights the importance of men's health, was held in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. Movember is the global movement of growing moustaches in November to raise awareness of men's health issues like prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
To draw the attention of both the young and old to the issues, VPS Healthcare hosted Formula 1 racing driver Daniel Ricciardo for a shave-off challenge at Burjeel Day Surgery Centre on Al Reem Island.
Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, chairman and managing director of VPS Healthcare, said the event was held as part of a 'Health is Wealth UAE' campaign and urged everyone to participate.
"We all have responsibility to take up things which are below the radar. I think that's what gives us the biggest satisfaction. This is a movement which has just started and there will be bigger campaigns in years to come. We all have to find time for ourselves and our health. There are no excuses. It is not just for you but also for family and loved ones," he said, adding that such initiatives were in line with the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda for world-class healthcare.
F1 racer Ricciardo said health and fitness were important aspects of his life.
"It is very important for us to be healthy through activity and diet. This has become a lifestyle. When I get a time off and don't pay attention to my health, I can feel it. I do feel the benefits of training and eating right. So, when I don't do it, it affects the system. You get tired, lethargic and can't be productive in day-to-day activities."
The Australian driver encouraged people to show off their moustaches and be part of the movement to raise awareness of men's health.
Accepting the challenge, Ricciardo, Vayalil and Kris Fade of Virgin Radio Dubai shaved their beards.
