Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and Managing Director of VPS Healthcare, has donated Dh26 million to aid in the recovery and rebuilding of the Indian state of Kerala in the aftermath of the devastating flash-floods.
These floods, the worst in a century, claimed hundreds of lives in the south Indian state, displaced thousands, damaged their homes and properties, and severely destroyed infrastructure and utilities.
The VPS donation supports an urgent relief campaign launched by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation as per the directives of The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and HHis Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Mohammed Haji Al Khoury, Director-General of the foundation, commended the generous donation offered by the Indian businessman, which he said would contribute to efforts to restoring hope and life in Kerala and help Keralites overcome this calamity as soon as possible.
He affirmed that the humanitarian gesture of Dr. Shamsheer and a large number of resident Indian businessmen underlines their vital role in supporting the humanitarian, charitable and developmental work and their responsibility towards the community, which shows that their contribution has a value-added quality within the UAE's humanitarian work system.
"This will promote the UAE's leading standing as the world's largest donor of foreign aid. This high ranking would not have been gained without the contribution of government agencies along with the active participation of UAE citizens and residents alike," he stated.
