The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has urged residents to replace damaged flags, or those with fading colours affected by wind, dust and natural elements.
The call came after the civic body conducted an inspection campaign in Al Shahama, where officials noted a "significant" number of damaged UAE flags hoisted on roofs of several houses, ranches and farms.
The municipality said this "negatively affects the civilised appearance of the city and reflects an image that does not illustrate the symbolic implications and the national value of the UAE flag".
"In this context, the municipality calls on all citizens and residents to take early action towards replacing the flags affected by the sunlight or wind with new ones, depicting the sense of belonging and loyalty," said the civic body.
The municipality called for removing flags which were incompatible with the required designs in shape, pattern and design. "The protection of the UAE flag is the responsibility of everyone, and it is a true manifestation of patriotism and loyalty to the nation."
The municipality will periodically check and assess all the state flags hoisted across Abu Dhabi city and its suburbs, it added.
