Make sure all appliances are unplugged before travelling abroad for a vacation, civil defence authorities in the Capital have reminded residents.
Officials said families must comply with all requirements to keep their homes fire-safe, especially this July, which experts have said would be the hottest month of the year.
High temperatures may result in fire incidents so residents must take extra precaution, the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence has said.
Brigadier-General Mohammed Mayouf Al Ketbi, director general of civil defence in Abu Dhabi, said families planning to travel abroad for the summer holidays should make sure that electricity is completely disconnected from the entire house and that no electrical equipment is left in operation.
"Families should observe the safety requirements, including switching off air-conditioners and other electricity equipment. Gas cylinders must also be closed," said Brig-Gen Al Ketbi.
He also urged residents to double-check their kitchens, including their stoves and water heaters, before leaving the house, as most items found in this area are highly flammable.
No electrical wires or clothes must be left near stoves or ovens. Grills must also be kept clean as a build-up of fat, oil or food may start a fire, said authorities.
Motorists who park their vehicles under the sun should keep the vehicles' windows slightly open to avoid overheating the items left in the car - from food to soft drinks, perfume, lighters, batteries and other devices.
Fire alarms should have been installed in all homes and buildings, said Brig-Gen Al Ketbi.
Construction firms and other companies in industrial areas have also been told to observe safety measures at their premises and accommodations.
"The civil defence teams are ready to meet the needs of the community and individuals in terms of protection, safety or emergency situations," the officer said.
He called on people to cooperate with the department, as community involvement is key in preventing such incidents.
