Bus shelters will almost double across the capital this year with the introduction of new and modern air conditioned shelters on various roads of the city.
The Department of Transport (DoT) said on Sunday that they are introducing 100 new and modern air-conditioned shelters in Abu Dhabi during 2018 as part of the bigger project to provide modern shelters across the emirate.
70 of the new shelters are already in place on various roads and being used, while the remaining 30 will be in place by end of 2018. The project will cost Dh35 million.
The DoT officials told reporters during a media tour of the new bus shelters that they will be introducing 600 new air conditioned shelters across the emirate by 2020, including 400 shelters in Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafar region and 200 shelters in Al Ain.

Currently there are 130 old bus shelters in Abu Dhabi. And the DoT said it has also upgraded these old facilities including maintaining and replacing their air conditioners, installing in lights and giving them new shapes so as to meet the new standards.
The introduction of new and modern bus shelters followed complaints from commuters about the shortage of shelters in some busy areas and the lack of or faulty air conditioners in the old shelters, according to authorities.
The new shelters have been equipped with 24-hour air-conditioners, CCTV cameras, generators and have been designed in various shapes and colours depending on their location.
The shelters have also been enlarged in size according to the demand and population of the areas with smallest taking up to 15 people standing and the biggest accommodating 22 people standing. There is also a mega shelter which is being built just opposite the main Abu Dhabi bus terminal and will accommodate around 60 people.
