A 13-year-old Emirati boy sustained moderate injuries after he was attacked by a stray dog at the Faisal area of Fujairah.
According to sources, the boy, identified as Ammar Al Mismari, was picnicking at the Faisal Corniche when the dog appeared from nowhere and attacked him.
"The young boy, who received moderate injuries and bruises in his leg, neck and back, was rushed to the Fujairah hospital."
Medical sources said the boy was admitted to the emergency section of the hospital.
"Having been shifted to the hospital in time and getting the right vaccination have helped contain the case, and the boy's condition is stable now."
Ghazi Al Ahmad, a veterinarian, said a dog bite can be highly dangerous. "The bite of a wild or stray dog mostly carries a deadly virus that travels through the infected wound to the sensory nerves and from it to the central nervous system."
It can also spread inside the peripheral nerves or salivary glands and other tissues, he explained.
Not all dog bites can lead to such serious condition, but it is necessary to take the due vaccine as a precautionary measure, he pointed out.
Umm Al Quwain has seen several dog attacks against humans and animals. These include a six-year-old Egyptian boy attacked by 20 stray dogs.
Also, a pack of four stray dogs has attacked the animal barn of an Emirati national here at the Kaber area.
Mohammed Jassim Khamis, the owner of a farm, said he was awakened by the noise coming from the barn. "The dogs attacked the barn late at night, and killed 11 sheep and goats, most of which were pregnant, and seriously injured nine others."
The Fujairah police are, meanwhile, investigating the incident.
