For someone who thought of quitting tennis due to a financial crunch in 2017, Sumit Nagal became the first Indian in seven years to win a Grand Slam match on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old player beat Bradley Klahn of the US 6-1 6-3 3-6 6-1 in the US Open first round on Tuesday to set up a clash with world number three Dominic Thiem.

But if it was not for the support from the Virat Kohli Foundation, Nagal would not have got a chance to rub shoulders with an elite player like Thiem.
Naturally, the young player from Haryana thanked the Indian cricket captain for his support.
"My first Slam win. It was definitely a special moment and a match I will not forget. Thank you everyone for the wishes. Next match on Thursday, gonna be a fun one. Special thanks to my team - @vkfofficial @imVkohli @SOLINCOsports @IndianOilcl @lottosport," Nagal tweeted after his match.
Nagal, who took a set off Roger Federer in the first round at the 2019 US Open, is now ready for the clash against Thiem on Thursday.
"I've got nothing to lose. Last year I played Roger Federer and this year Thiem. It's going to be a great match. For sure, I'm not the favourite," he said.
The Indian player believes Thiem could be little rusty due to the lack of regular matches in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"I don't think we've had enough match practice on hard courts," Nagal said.
"It's going to be the same for both of us for the match on Thursday."
