Sometimes titles for films come along that are just too easy. Based on a book, the author must have had a hand at keeping the original name, because only existing fans of the work will give it a go with this label.

Odd Thomas charts the story of a young man, strangely enough called Odd Thomas, whom, upon seeing the ghost of a teenage girl, embarks on a series of odd-ball meetings in order to determine how she died. Sorry to be a little vague. Maybe we’re a bit dense, but we just don’t get it.

We’re not the only ones. Most professional critics have panned the hour-and-a-half long picture. Jeannette Catsoulis from the New York Times said: “At once comic, tragic and goofily romantic, and resting too often on Odd’s clarifying narration, this young-adult lark breaches the nonsense barrier with some regularity.”

Lovers of the book have praised the adaptation, but that may not be enough to save it from extinction in next week’s listings.

Imdb gives the film 6.4 out of 10 whereas rottentomatoes.com gives it 30%
