The festivities centred on Chinese New Year are in full swing across the city with tonnes to see and do. But if you prefer to stay indoors, here are some fun themed activities you can try out with the kids:

Decorate paper lanterns

Painting is therapeutic so get creative with some plain paper lanterns. These come in various shapes and sizes, and serve a good base for painting with acrylics. Try drawing simple flower designs, such as dotted cherry blossoms or if feeling confident, try painting a dragon.

Try out calligraphy

In an age where we're tapping away at the keyboard rather than taking notes, having some a bit of penmanship is a great skill to have. Use this opportunity to help them improve their handwriting. Let them practice different kinds of cursive writing with various tools like ink pens, markers, thin paintbrushes, etc.

Make dumplings

Rest assured making Chinese-style dumplings is not as complicated as you'd think. Lay out some store-bought dumpling wrappers, set aside finely chopped and seasoned veggies, minced meat, etc. and a bowl of cold water in advance. With a teaspoon, scoop the mixture into the wrapper, and using your fingers, gently twist the ends shut. Dip a finger in water to help the edges stick. Once done, steam the dumplings in a bamboo basket for a rewarding treat.

Play Mahjong

Developed in the Qing dynasty, Mahjong is a tile-based strategy game that will inspire your child to rack their brains and think out of the box. Simply head over to your favourite board game store and grab a Mahjong set for the occasion. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet to help you learn the game quick and start playing. Start slow and steady, you can challenge your children once they have learned the basics of the game.

Craft money envelopes

On Chinese New Year, it is customary for adults to give children gifts of notes and coins. Symbolic to prosperity and good fortune, this is often presented in a red and gold envelope. Create your own little packs with craft and crepe paper. As an alternative, you can even switch to sewing little money bags in the red and gold, if your child is up for a challenge. Remember to always supervise them whenever they are working with sharp objects such as scissors and needles.
