Pick from a selection of burners
The mabkhara (incence burner) is a tray that serves as a safe and sturdy base for burning bakhoor. These come in metal or clay in different styles - from traditional four-tipped crown design, to contemporary artistic displays.

Electric or charcoal?
Newer versions of mabkhara operate on electricity, adding convenience and additional safety when looking to freshen up your home. But most bakhoor lovers prefer using its dedicated charcoal as the scent is more intense.

Know your bakhoor
These deliciously addictive aromas are available in three types:

Pure oud: 100 per cent organic and sourced from rare aromatic trees found in Asia and mountainous regions. This is the most expensive of them all.
Oils and perfume: Concentrated liquids in a bottle for a spritz or dab on the go.
Dokhoon: Manmade clusters featuring natural ingredients and essential oils.

How to light up
- Light up a piece of charcoal in a mabkhara until you see sparks and a warm red glow.
- Place a piece of oud, or crumble bits of dokhoon, on top of the disc with a pair of tongs.
- Enjoy the rich, exotic fragrance.
- Once done, cover the mabkhara with a ceramic dish. Do not dispose the coal until you are sure it has fully cooled down. To check, sprinkle a bit of water and listen for sizzles.

Always burn bakhoor under supervision, and keep it out of reach from pets and children.
