Indian rupee hits new lifetime low

The Indian rupee hit a fresh lifetime low against the dollar, as risk averse global investors drowned out central bank efforts to stem the currency’s slide.

The rupee hit 54.44 against the dollar Wednesday, breaching its prior all-time low of 54.39 on December 15.

The slide helped send the stock market’s benchmark Sensex index down 1.8 percent.

Analysts expect further depreciation in the currency.
