It looks to be a showdown between Team Valtorque and the Danube Tigers in the contest for the title of Silver Division Champion in the Sprite Challengers Cup, after excellent performances from both teams saw them book passage to the final at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City.
Although Valtorque did make it to the finals, they were pushed all the way in their quarterfinal against Pacific Ventures B, with just seven runs separating the two teams. Batting first, Pacific Ventures B made 39 runs, which was surpassed by Valtorque, who started at a brisk pace with 24 runs coming from the first four overs and they continued to score at that pace to put themselves into the semifinals.
If Valtorque thought their fixture against Pacific Ventures B was to be their most challenging of the night, they were wrong. Up next for them in the Silver semis were Al Futtaim Logistics, defending champions of the division.
Valtorque though made light work of their opponents. Batting first, Al Futtaim Logistics could only manage to put up 20 runs, with the former then easing past them by posting 42 runs in their time on the pitch.
But while Valtorque had to overcome two tough fixtures, Danube Tigers had a relatively easier time, with their performances against the Chargers and Fine Legs earning them plenty of respect in their first season in the Sprite Challengers Cup.
In their quarterfinal play-off against the Chargers, the Tigers restricted their opponents to a paltry nine runs from their eight overs, while then proceeding to display their batting prowess, scoring 41 runs in response.
Fine Legs (38) had done well in their quarter-final, beating DBMSC-B by seven runs, but just a solitary run came from innings against the Tigers, who made quick work of their opposite numbers on the pitch, with 44 runs coming from their eight overs.
While the fixtures for the Silver finals have been decided, the road to the Bronze finals is still to be mapped.
The Acosca Raiders will be taking part in the next round of the Bronze Division after their 22-run win against Infinity (20), who could not match their opponent's total during their time on the pitch.
