Hong Kong got on the scoresheet as early as the second minute as a charged-down clearance kick fell invitingly into Ally Maclay’s hands and two swift passes released Rowan Varty to go over down the left channel for an unconverted try.
Varty dotted again in similar style four minutes later and fly-half Keith Robertson slotted over the extras this time to open up an early 12-0 advantage.
A penalty award at a UAE turnover duly presented the hosts with a timely opportunity to reduce the deficit, which number 10 Andrew Russell gratefully accepted, only for Robertson’s boot to restore the comfortable buffer.
Further scores by Robertson – which he converted himself – and Hong Kong’s hat-trick hero Varty stretched the gap out to 27-3 halfway through the opening 40 minutes. Centre Maclay then burrowed through some weak tackles to cross over under the posts, allowing Robertson an easy kick, and the same player ran in his second try shortly afterwards for 39-3.
The UAE rallied strongly in the latter stages of the first half and their efforts were finally rewarded when captain Alistair Thompson drove over. Russell added the conversion for a half-time score of 39-10 to Hong Kong.
That late flurry would undoubtedly have lifted spirits in the hosts’ dressing room at the interval.
However, that newfound impetus slowly dissipated upon the resumption of play as Hong Kong notched up 46 unanswered points without reply.
Alex McQueen (2), Lee Jones, Shing Yiu Kam, Varty (2), Renaud Chavanis and Nick Hewson registered eight second-half tries between them overall, with McQueen (1) and Jamie Hood (2) adding three conversions in a heavy reverse.
Meanwhile, the night had at least started well for the home contingent, with the UAE Shaheen – a developmental, all-Emirati squad – emerging victorious from a best-of-three Sevens series against Afghanistan 2-1.
The two teams shared the spoils in the opening two friendlies, with UAE Shaheen prevailing 12-0 first up before Afghanistan hit back 24-0 thereafter, to force a decider that the former won 10-5.
