The UAE’s Brazilian coach Marcelo Mendes announced the team which is a mix between youth and experience for this year’s campaign. The experienced players in the squad includes Al Ahli’s Qambar Ali and Rami Al Mussaibi along with Al Nasr striker Ali Hassan Karim and Mohammad Abbas of Al Wasl.
There are a couple of fresh faces including goalkeeper Obaid Thani, who put up a fantastic display in Al Shabab getting the third place in the recently-concluded Beach Soccer President’s Cup.
Abbas Ali Daryaei from Al Nasr, Hussain Al Hammadi from Ajman and Butti Abdul Hussain from Al Wasl are the other three players who will make their UAE debut this year. “I have tried as much as possible to find a blend between experience and youth in the squad,” Mendes said. “It is important to have the senior players along with the juniors as that is the only way the younger ones can learn and benefit from this experience of playing in a huge competition like an Intercontinental Cup,” the coach added.
The UAE squad has been training every day at the pitch at the Al Mamzar Beach and coach Marcelo is trying his best to get his players mentally prepared for such a huge competition. “Practice is not a problem, but we also need to look at the mental side of the players. We must ensure the players, especially the younger ones, don’t get nervous on the big stage,” the coach observed.
The Samsung Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup will be played at a specially set-up sand pitch at the Dubai Festival City from October 30 to November 3. The tournament is being organised by the Dubai Sports Council under the supervision of Beach Soccer World Wide, the beach soccer arm of world governing body FIFA.
