“November this year is loaded with so many events that all of us at the physical education departments in most schools will be totally absorbed while taking the teams out and when hosting events in various disciplines,” said NIMS-Sharjah’s G. Vijayakumar, one of the pioneers of schools basketball in the UAE and the Gulf.
The traditional annual event in soccer, held by Our Own High School, Sharjah (OOHS-S) kicks off the activities when 16 top teams in the country will take part on the natural grass surface at the Sharjah Wanderers Sports Club.
The OOHS championship has come a long way and is now considered the unofficial symbol of supremacy in schools soccer here.
The popular tourney sees entries from the British syllabus schools as well taking part with Westminster, Dubai being strong contenders always, with their robust and attacking brand of soccer.
The DPS Sports Festival in early November promises to be another busy week for youngsters in the multi sport age group event spread over a fortnight.
DPS, Sharjah have led the way in sports talent promotions every season not only as hosts to big tournaments but one where scholarship programmes are instituted for promising talent.
The DPS Sharjah fest sees separate championships being conducted on a parallel basis in basketball (boys under 15, girls under 10, cricket (sub junior boys) and table tennis for boys and girls.
Then comes the championship which many here have been waiting patiently since the first edition was held during 2011-12 — the 3SM promoted UAE High School Basketball Championships (UAEHSBC), from the first week of November.
The long drawn event will see schools of all syllabi putting forward their best. This year however sees just one CBSE school taking part.
One must remember that UAEHSBC gave away a Dh50,000 first prize cash money to St Marys High School, Dubai, the champions in the inaugural event.
Another grassroot level promoter of sports here, NIMS, Sharjah, at this moment looks the only CBSE side taking part in the second edition of the UAEHSBC this year.
The NIMS cagers play their first match on Friday, November 9 morning against Victoria International School (VIS), Sharjah at the VIS court near the Al Tawun Mall, Sharjah.
Four teams from Sharjah will play a round robin series to determine the top two qualifiers for the quarter-finals scheduled to be held in Dubai in February-March 2013.
The other institutions in the Sharjah cluster are the Australian International School and Chouiefat International School, Sharjah.
Strong NIMS-Sharjah will in between host the CBSE UAE cluster basketball events for boys and girls from November 10 to 14. Two teams from the boys and girls divisions will qualify to take part in the CBSE Nationals in Jaipur, India from December 5-11.
Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a, another big name when it comes to hosting school events, will host the CBSE UAE Cluster volleyball championship where the top sides stand eligible for the Nationals in Jaipur in December.
Emirates English Speaking School are hosts for the CBSE UAE Cluster soccer for qualification to the Nationals in India at the end of the year.
The Indian High School (IHS) play hosts for the CBSE UAE Cluster athletics meet to choose the best talent in the country for the Nationals in Chennai, again in December this season. IHS will also take up the responsibility of holding the CBSE Cluster soccer for girls.
The 23rd NIMS Trophy basketball tournament for senior boys will be conducted during the second week of December.
The NIMS-Sharjah event is the longest standing basketball championship for senior boys in the UAE.
The 4th Skyline University College Inter School Sports Festival, another multi-discipline event will see basketball (boys and girls), soccer (boys) and table tennis (boys and girls) events from November 23 to 29.
The Sharjah-based higher education institute offers part and full scholarship for academically bright students who perform well during their sports festival.
November again has more big events squeezed into the sports calendar when the Our Own High School, Al Warqa’s athletics meet and two volleyball tournaments, to be held by NIMS-Dubai and Central School, Dubai, get going.
