SLC cagers gear up for AWST

The Basketball Team at Sharjah Women Club continued its preparations for the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) 2014, set to be held in Sharjah between February 2 and 12.

In this context, the team will participate in the UAE’s National Women’s Basketball League starting on Friday. The first round of the League is set to be held on December 20 and 27, and January 3 and 10.

In the opening game, Sharjah Ladies club will face Al Wusta Ladies Club, while Al Sharqyeh Ladies Club faces Bani at the same time. Al Nasr Club will not play on the first day, as the League consists of 5 teams. Sharjah Ladies Club team consists of 11 players: Najat Seif Bouraheema, Amal Jamal bin Haydar, Mashaer Abdulaziz Belal, Suhaila Mohamad Abbas, Duaa Bassam, Sarah Issa, Alaa Bassam, Alyazya Sultan, Hind Salem, Zainab Al Hudairi, and the pro player Aline Roz.

Commenting on this event, Mai Al Amri, volleyball and basketball administrative, said: “The UAE’s National Women Basketball League is the ideal opportunity to prepare Sharjah Ladies Club basketball team for AWST 2014. This is why league games are an essential part of the team’s preparation programme for this tournament.” “SLC came third in the first AWST Tournament in 2012, and we are hoping it will gain the gold medal this time,” she added.

“We realise the challenges ahead of us, specially in the presence of some of the best Arab basketball teams and players, but we have great confidence in the capabilities of our players, and we plan to support these capabilities with a preparation programme starting early enough to be ready for this great event in February 2014. Our goal is to represent the UAE in the best possible manner and gain respect as well as achieve results.”
