Shaikha Maitha to head UAE Team in season-ending polo tourney in Capital

Abu Dhabi — The Emirates Open International Polo Championship will bring the curtains down on Abu Dhabi’s polo season.

Eight teams, including defending champions Bin Drai Team, have confirmed participation for the 14th edition of the event organised by the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club and supported by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC).

Apart from Bin Drai Team, the other teams are runners-up Desert Palm Team, UAE Team, Ghantoot Al Basti Team, Edrees Team, Al Habtoor Team, Abu Dhabi Team and Zedan Team.

The UAE Team will be led by Shaikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The Championship, which carries a total prize purse of Dh 1.5 million, begins this Friday and ends on April 3 at the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club.

 The details of the tournament were announced by Saeed bin Houfan Al Mansouri, Vice Chairman of the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

The conference was also attended by Ahmed Al Nuaimi, Managing Director of Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club, Fadel Al Mansouri, representative of the ADSC and Yousif Bin Dasmal, captain of the Ghantoot Polo team.

Saeed bin Houfan Al Mansouri hoped for a successful Championship.

“These are fabulous days for polo especially with regional and international teams participating in the event. It shows the level that polo has reached.

“The participation of the regions top teams in the tournament confirms its outstanding reputation,” Saeed bin Houfan Al Mansouri said on Tuesday.
