Qaid claims first gold for UAE at Asian Para Games

Dubai: Mohammed Qaid clinched the first gold medal for the UAE in a men’s 100 metres wheelchair category race, at the 2ndAsian Para Games for physically challenged athletes, in Incheon on Day 3.

Qaid who has a cupboard full of medals and trophies from the various world events he has taken part in, including the London Olympics, ‘sprinted’ past the strong field for the UAE’s first gold at the meet in South Korea.

The UAE now have 12 medals — 1 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronzes — after Monday’s action and the early events on Tuesday.

Aisha Al Khalidi got the silver in a women’s discus event with a throw of 44.9m. A. Al Zaabi won bronze in another category of the discus event with a best effort of 31.13m. On Tuesday, Abdulaziz Shukaily, landed silver in his shot put classification, while the versatile Aisha claimed her second silver in javelin.

A third medal came Aisha’s way (total of two silvers and a bronze), when she won bronze in a women’s classification shot put event. Nora Ketbi won silver in her division’s javelin while Sarah Qubaisi won third place in the same classification.

Mohammed Al Habsi won a bronze in fencing earlier on Day 1, the first time ever by a UAE athlete, in an event totally new to the UAE sports scene for the differently abled.
