Dubai — The inaugural Pan Emirate Schools Rugby Tournament commenced at Dubai Sports City’s indoor arena on Monday morning in another encouraging development for the grassroots of the oval-ball game here.

The competition, which will be played in a six-a-side Touch Rugby format between 10am and 12noon, shall see sides represent schools from Dubai, Sharjah, Kalba, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. Each team will consist solely of Grade 10 students and made up of 12 to 15 players. “On April 14th, UAE Rugby Federation (UAERF) development officers trained six coaches to implement the World Rugby ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme across six regions,” explained the UAERF’s rugby development manager Ben van Rooyen.

“Each region was provided with the necessary equipment and the coaches’ training was conducted in Arabic by the Federation’s RDOsSami Smara and Walid Naouali.” Each of the training sessions were overseen by van Rooyen to ensure all six regions were making equal progress and now – in another exciting step in the growth of the sport among the Emirati community — they’re ready to compete today. “We are thrilled with the amount of enthusiasm among the players and coaches,” said the UAERF’s secretary general Qais Al Dhalai. “This is the first time that an inter-Emirate rugby tournament has been played and we are especially honoured by the recognition of the UAE Olympic Committee and its secretary general Mohammad Al Kamali.”
