Dedefo warns female field
DUBAI - The coach of two-time champion Aselefech Mergia has warned the rest of the female field at Friday’s Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon that two of his elite runners are primed to prevail in “best-ever” shape.
Mergia clocked a new Ethiopian and course record — as well as a personal best (PB), with 2h19m31s last year to retain her crown — although her hopes of a heady hat-trick this weekend have since been dashed by injury.
Still, in fellow countrywomen Tirfi Tsegaye and Koren Jelela, Mergia’s coach Gemedu Dedefo believes he has a sterling pair with sufficient pace to dip beneath that prior marker. “I am the coach of both of them and Aselefech Mergia and I know their shape is better than ever for the run,” he said.
