Usman Kunda of Eagles attempts a difficult turnaround jump shot against the strong defence of the DCBL All Stars.

The overall superiority of the hosts DCBL’s offence and defence was stamped from the beginning of the second quarter after managed to match the home team during the first visit.

This was DCBL’s 2nd Division All Stars squad where the competition rules make it mandatory for players to be below 6ft 2in.

Jojo Roque led the DCBL-All Stars with 13 points, while Kent Lamique and Eric delos Santos added 10 each and Paul Buenafe pumped in seven timely markers.

Hardworking shooting guard Usman Kunda led Blue Rhine Eagles with 12 points, followed by point guard and playmaker Kevin Varghese’s tally of 8.

“The exhibition game is a clear testament of camaraderie between Filipino and Indian expat communities in the UAE,” said DCBL governor Rante Bautista, organiser of the event.

“The DCBL-All Stars won with big margin but the real winner was our‘kababayan’ Larry Castro, who is suffering from blood cancer.

“We were able to raise some funds for his bone marrow transplant and it’s not just the Filipino community who helped us but other expats as well,” Bautista added.

Castro sent out a Facebook message and thanked the organisers of DCBL for their help in raising funds for his medical expenses.

He is now on his fourth cycle of chemotherapy but only a successful bone transplant can totally cure him. He can be reached at 056-2633927 for those who want to make financial donation.

BRE coach Sunil Mathew said: “It was a nice basketball match and for a good cause. I hope this is a start for more such events for inter-community sports here in the UAE.”

Blue Rhine Eagles started strong and took an early lead as Varghese, who is the reigning MVP in the IBSL, hit a three-pointer which gave the Indian team a two-point lead, 8-6, in the opening minutes of the match.

But DCBL All Stars coach Roland Crisostomo called a quick time out and called his players to shift to trapping defence.

The Philippine side then controlled the pace of the game and led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, read a match analysis by the official table scorers.

DCBL All Stars increased their lead to double-digits, 31-16, at the turn and their sticky defence forced BRE to commit numerous turnovers which they converted into fast break points in transition.

The game was already a cinch for DCBL All Stars as they entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 22-point lead, 48-26.

DCBL coach Crisostosmo said: “We focused our defence on Varghese and we used our speed to outrun the Blue Rhine Eagles.”

Meanwhile, Bautista announced more exhibition games for the DCBL All Stars in the next few weeks. “We’re preparing for friendly matches in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain,” Bautista said.
