The world number 11 has never beaten the tournament’s second seed on a hard court surface, with her sole success so far coming on the green grass of Wimbledon three years ago.
It’s little wonder then that the French wildcard wants her higher ranked opponent in the last 16 to come onto Centre Court with a dour demeanour that’s below bright and breezy and worse than wide awake.
“I don’ think there is ever a very good time to play Serena. Maybe at 4am after she hasn’t slept for three days!” the 28-year-old quipped of her forthcoming match.
“You cannot really get a tougher challenge than this one, but I’m a sportsperson. I don’t expect to have something easy.
“When you come to Dubai, you’re not coming to play against someone ranked 100th in the world. You’re coming to play against the very tough players.
“It’s going to be a very hard test, but it will show me where I am and where I need to improve. You don’t just need fighting spirit against Serena. You need the shot, the power, the movement and absolutely everything.”
