Anwar shines in UAE win

Shaiman Anwar struck an amazing unbeaten century as UAE opened their campaign on a winning note in their first Group B match against hosts Singapore in the Asian Cricket Council Emerging Teams Cup on Monday, a Press release stated.

After Nasir Aziz’s fine bowling performance that ensured UAE needed to chase a target of only 163 to win, Anwar, who dealt largely in boundaries, raced to an impressive 119 not out as the visitors coasted to a comfortable nine-wicket victory in the 28th over.

Put in to bat, Singapore put a good show initially with openers Andre de Lange (26) and Chetan Suryawanshi (33) sharing a fruitful 55 runs partnership for the opening wicket.

UAE got their first breakthrough when Ahmed Raza accounted for the first wicket to remove de Lange. That triggered a small collapse including two run outs which cost Singapore dear.

Normalcy returned when Anish Param and Kshitij Shide scored an identical 21. But yet another run out involving Shinde meant runs were not coming easy for the hosts.

Aziz then got into the act with a fiery bowling performance. He accounted for four wickets to run through the remaining batsmen as Singapore were bundled out for 162 in 48 overs.

Rezza Gaznavi chipped in with 16 while Narender Reddy remained unbeaten on 14.

Chasing a moderate target, UAE were on the right track from the word go with Anwar and Abdul Shakoor sharing a superb 129-run for the first wicket.

Shakoor departed scoring a 57-ball 36 including four boundaries but Anwar ensured he remained till the end as he blasted 119 from only 104 deliveries.

His innings also included an impressive 17 hits to the fence and three over it as UAE scored 164 for one in 27.3 overs.

Singapore tried as many as eight bowlers but to no avail as UAE comfortably earned their two points from the victory.

UAE will take on Sri Lanka under-23 in their second Group match onTuesday, August 20.
