Allepey create ripples to keep KPL semis hopes alive

Space CSS Allepey Ripples kept their hopes alive for the semi-finals by winning against a solid Phoenix Medicine Kollam Kernals by 30 runs while Trotters Independent Traders Waynad Highlanders playing for pride beat Globe Link Weststar Pathanamthitta Rajas by 36 runs in the KPL Dubai 2012 – Season 2 cricket tournament according to a Press release.

Space-Allepey, who handed Kollam Kernals their first defeat in the tournament, will now have to beat Dunes Cuisine Kannur Veerans in their last league game on Thursday to get back into contention for a semi-final spot.

The KPL tournament is organised by KPL Organising Committee and conducted under the auspices of the Dubai Cricket Council. Danube Buildmart are the sponsors for cash awards for best performers while Debonairs Pizza and Roti Mum are the food sponsors.

Sri Lankan international Dilhara Lokuhettige scored a rapid 52 off 35 balls, laced with six fours and two sixes to give Allepey a good start. In-form Baber Malik built on the good start blasting four sixes and five boundaries to score an unbeaten 54 off 30 balls.

Malik was well supported by Irfan Haji, who smashed 60 runs in just 21 balls, including six sixes and four boundaries to help Allepey pile up 193 runs in 20 overs.

In reply, Kollam Kernals lost Zeeshan Jameel early on, but Mohammad Qasim and Hafiz Kaleem put on 55 runs in five overs, before Hafiz was out for 31 runs. Hafiz hit four sixes and a boundary. Left-arm spinner Fayyaz Ahmed then bowled a match-winning spell first picking up the wickets of Ayoub Inayat and Saqlain Haider (34).

Ahmed then he ran through the lower-order, bagging the wickets of Asif Mumtaz , Bijay Raj, and Abdullah to skittle Kollam Kernals for 163 runs and hand them their first defeat. Fayyaz finished with an excellent figure of five wickets for 14 runs. In the second game Waynad Highlanders piled on 200 runs in their twenty overs as Afghanistan players Mohammad Shehzad and Samiullah Shenwari dazzled with excellent batting performances. Opener Shahzad struck eight boundaries in his knock of 40 runs in 21 balls to give them a superb start.

Down the order Shinwari then cut loose to slam four sixes and six fours to notch up 53 runs in 15 balls in his whirlwind knock which saw his team to a formidable score.

Pathanamthitta started off well with Hemin Desai making a quick 19 runs while young under 22 player Aqib Malik played a solid knock of 79 runs to show case his credentials as an upcoming cricketer. He hit three sixes and six boundaries and only took 51 balls for his knock. The middle order faltered as Ramesh Chinnan bowled a tight length to prise out three wickets to restrict rajas to 164 runs.
