DUBAI - The opening heat of the Majid Cup 60ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race will be held on Saturday.
Organisers are expecting more than 50 dhows to confirm their participation for this very popular race series that culminates with the annual Sir Bu Naair to Dubai race.
In a breakaway from normal competition, organisers Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) have decided to have the race starting from Moon Island and heading straight to the finish line at the Burj Al Arab.
“There was a popular demand from competitors to have this race on a familiar route so that the boats can get accustomed to sailing conditions on the route. This was the route used by our forefathers and the competitors felt it would be unique to have the heats on the same route in commemoration of this fact,” stated Ali Juma Ali Bin Ghulaitha, Acting CEO of DIMC.
With the first heat taking place this weekend, the second heat will be held in February and the concluding heat will be the Sir Bu Naair to Dubai race in May.
Competitors for the opening round are required to assemble with their boats at the Moon Island.
