Alex, Saigunan star in Kochi win

Arun Alex shone for Capital CMC Kochi Diwans churning out an impressive all-round performance while Thalaivan Saigunan came up with yet another good batting performance to lead their side to joint top spot in the ‘B’ group with Yogi Thrissur, both with six points each, according to a Press release.

Kochi Diwans buoyed by their win over a strong Waynad Highlanders carried the momentum forward by setting up a total of 157 runs against winless Mallapuram Knights and then skittled them out for 76 runs in 14.3 overs.

Skipper Jiju Janardanan scored 29 runs off 22 balls with four boundaries. Yusuf Butt and Pervez Ahmed then rattled the Kochi middle-order to put them in a spot at 67 for three wickets. Then a crucial 67-run fourth wicket partnership between Alex and Saigunan, a Ranji Trophy probable for Indian state Tamil Nadu, salvaged the situation

Arun played sedately for his 34 runs which took him 33 balls and he hit two fours while Thalaivan smashed three sixes and two fours in his knock of 39 runs and just took 21 balls to see Kochi Diwans to a good total. Arun Venny also rattled up a quick 19 runs in eleven balls with three fours to take them there. Pervez Ahmed finished with four wickets for 28 runs while Yusuf Butt picked up two wickets for 17 runs.

Kochi Diwans Medium pacer Riyas and Jiju Janardanan then jolted Mallapuram Knights picking up the first three batsmen with just 20 runs on the board. Faizan 22, and Andre 18, then added 17 runs before both the batsmen were picked up by Jeevan. Prashanth and Arun Alex then ran through the lower order bagging a couple of wickets each to bowl Mallapuram Knights out for 76 runs in 14.3 overs and relay a strong warning to the other sides in the tournament.
