Dubai — Al Shabab are on course for a double this season after a dramatic victory over Bani Yas put them in the semifinals of the President’s Cup.

Al Shabab and Bani Yas were locked 1-1 after 120 minutes after which ‘The Hawks’ prevailed 5-4 on penalties at the Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, late on Saturday night.

The Sky Blues were unlucky after Angel Dealbert scored an own goal to give Al Shabab the lead with 15 minutes left. But Joan Verdu made sure it was not all over just yet, heading home the equaliser, with six minutes left on the clock. They were locked on penalties too with Joan Verdu Yousef Jaber and Amer Abdulrahman scoring for Bani Yas and Henrique Luvannor, Edgar Bruno and Azizbek Haydarov scoring for Al Shabab. But Al Shabab goalkeeper Salem Abdulla blocked Imad AQ Khalili’s left-footer and that proved crucial in the end. Nasser Masood was then on target for Al Shabab and even though substitute Haboush Saleh netted to make it 4-4, Hassan Ibrahim kept his cool to slot home the final spot kick.

The first half was largely a midfield battle but Bani Yas looked a tad more threatening than Al Shabab, who were content on counters. Bani Yas didn’t take long to have a look-in with Denis Stracqualursi building up a move from the right in the third minute. But Joan Verdu’s attempt on the run, deflected off a defender and went over the cross bar for a corner, after Stracqualursi’s pass from the right. Al Shabab’s first of only two chances in the half came on 17 minutes when Dawood Ali crossed from the right and goalkeeper Mohsin Al Hashmi fumbled with it initially but managed to collect Henrique Luvannor’s dipping header.

Joan Verdu had a crack at goal for Bani Yas from just outside the box on 20 minutes, but his effort didn’t have enough venom to threaten the goalkeeper. Stracqualursi then saw his attempt go over the cross bar after a brilliant Amer Abdulrahman volley from the right, nine minutes later.
