Al Shabab, Al Nasr bow out

UAE’s Al Nasr and Al Shabab ran out of points and steam to make it to the next round of the AFC Champions League. Hosts Al Nasr went down 0-3 at the hands of Iran’s Foolad Sepahan at Al Maktoum Stadium on Tuesday night with one round remaining in the group stage.

Mahdi Karim found the net in the 44th minute of the first half with a lovely overhead to put the visitors in the lead. Xhevahir Sukaj doubled the scoreline in the 67th minute before substitute Mahdi Sayed headed home the third goal in the 67th minute.

In Doha, UAE’s Al Shabab bowed out of the tournament after a 1-2 defeat by Al Gharafa. Essa Mohammed put Al Shabab ahead in the 65th minute and Aruna Dindane levelled for the home team in the 84th minute. Three minutes later, Othman Assas made it 2-1 for Al GHarafa from the spot.

Shabab have three points from five starts. After losing 0-1 to hosts Sepahan in the opener, Al Nasr restored hopes with a last minute 2-1 victory over Qatar’s Lekhwiya.
