Al Jazira player Khamis Esmail backs Bonamigo

DUBAI — Khamis Esmail insists all of the Al Jazira squad will unite behind ex Al Shabab boss Paulo Bonamigo, if — as expected — he’s appointed to succeed Caio Junior as the club’s new manager.

The Abu Dhabi-based club retained the President’s Cup last term, but relinquished their grasp on the Etisalat Pro-League title to Al Ain by 20 points as they finished fourth in a 12-team league.

Jazira also reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League during a demanding season where they challenged on numerous fronts, yet only succeeded in one. Khamis is convinced that he and his team-mates though can get back to contesting for the major honours again in 2012/13, with Bonamigo seemingly guaranteed the full support of his playing personnel.

“We’ve had a really good campaign, but we’re aiming for much better in the coming season,” said the 22-year-old midfielder, who flies out with his UAE Olympic team-mates on Friday for their Swiss training camp prior to travelling on to this summer’s London Games.

“He (Bonamigo) is a really good coach because he did a great job with this team (Shabab).

“It will be a win-win scenario. We’ll help him and give him whatever he wants.

“He’s a great coach, so we’re hoping to have a really good season. “Every coach has his own tactics and we’re all pretty sure he has something to add. We’ll give him the maximum to make his job easy and we have confidence in him that he’ll do a really good job and add value to the team.”

Khamis Esmail was speaking to Khaleej Times at a promotional event for the adidas football boots Predator Lethal Zones.
