The UAE driver is the early leader in the prestigious Drivers’ Championship standings after his first place in Qatar and a second position in Tatarstan last month. Teammate Thani Al Qamzi, on the other hand, holds eighth position and knows that he must secure a podium finish if he is to maintain his title challenge this season.

The Team Abu Dhabi duo had mixed fortunes in Kiev last year, with Al Hameli securing a two-second chequered flag victory over Qatar’s former World Champion Jay Price and Al Qamzi finishing in seventh place over a lap behind the winner. Al Hameli arrives in Ukraine knowing that a podium finish would keep him firmly in the driving seat to secure the title for the UAE-based team.

Team Abu Dhabi runs under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) with support from the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA).

Salem Al Romaithi acts as the team head and works alongside team manager Scott Gillman.

Three up and coming UAE drivers have travelled with the team to Kiev to gain experience of top flight competition and two of the three will take part in the two F-4S races for the Eurofin Trophy. Mohammed Al Mehairbi currently lies in the fifth place in the F-4S Drivers’ Championship on 21 points, but he will spectate on this occasion.

Rashid Al Rumaithi and Rashid Al Qamzi will share driving responsibilities in the two races on Friday and Saturday. Al Qamzi holds 10th in the series on seven points, but England’s Matthew Palfreyman is the clear leader after four races, having amassed a maximum 80 points.

The weekend’s timetable gets under way with scrutineering and team registration on Thursday (July 19th), with the first of the practice sessions for the F1 and F-4S teams starting at 12.15hrs (UAE time) on Friday morning. The first of two F-4S races starts at 18.00 hrs and the first of three qualification sessions begins at 19.00hrs (UAE time).

Teams are permitted further practice on Saturday morning, before the second of the F-4S races starts at 1700hrs (UAE time) and the 2012 Grand Prix of Ukraine roars into life at 1900hrs (UAE time).
