Oppo announced that its first commercially-available 5G smartphone will be rolled out in the UAE by the end of September, but it is giving customers the chance to own it earlier.
The Oppo Reno 5G, the Dongguan-headquartered manufacturer's first next-gen device, is now exclusively available at the etisalat eShop until the device's general on-shelf availability on September 29.
In an interview last month, Oppo Middle East and Africa Andy Shi told Khaleej Times that the company was not in a hurry to launch their own 5G device, stressing that user experience always comes first.
"We just want to make sure the user experience will be very good. We're more conscious about the testing," he had said.
The Reno 5G is, by far, one of the most affordable 5G smartphones in the market at Dh3,699 - the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is also priced the same - making good on Oppo's strategy of offering devices at lower costs.
"We maintain close relationships in the supply chain, which impacts the prices of our products," Shi had added.
"If a phone meets all the needs, then it doesn't need to be expensive."
Oppo was a key contributor to the standardisation of 5G, successfully completing 5G Internet access for the first time in October 2018. It is investing substantially in the Gulf region, having shifted its Mena headquarters from Cairo to Dubai this year, and launching local operations in Saudi Arabia.
The company had also launched its 5G Landing Project with leading operator partners in the GCC earlier this year to accelerate the commercialisation of 5G products and services worldwide.
Among the key features of the Oppo Reno 5G are a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, a triple-lens system bannered by a 48MP 'ultra-clear' main camera, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of internal storage, a fourth-generation AI engine and 45 per cent better performance.
It also boasts a true all-screen display, featuring a motorised, pop-up 'sharkfin' front camera.
