ITU praises UAE for its firm support; selects Emiratis for senior positions

Houlin Zhao, the newly-elected secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on Thursday praised the UAE for its continued support of the union, noting that the world is looking forward to the next ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, which will be held in the UAE in 2018.

In his first press statement since his election, Zhao stressed the importance of continuing the spirit of global action to strengthen the role of the information and communication technology sector, its sustainable development, and achieving the goals set by the World Summit.

On behalf of the UAE, Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director-General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), congratulated Zhao on his election and wished him success in accomplishing the objectives set by the International Telecommunication Union.

Emirati boy’s address

Adeeb Al Balushi, the 10-year-old Emirati boy who accompanied the delegation of the TRA to the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan to convey the message of all young Emiratis to the rest of the world, addressed international delegates assembled from all over the world on the second day of the conference on Wednesday.

Al Ghanim abbreviated his speech marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the ITU, to give Adeeb Al Balushi the opportunity to impress the ITU audience of about 3,000 international delegates with his exceptional speech.

Adeeb Al Balushi enthralled the audience and make everyone listen with awe and admiration. He conveyed a thank message on behalf of Emirati children to the UAE leadership that empowered its people with everything to enhance their abilities to contribute in building their nation.

“On behalf of young people around the world, I ask you to listen to the voice of young people and engage them in setting ICT policies and related services,” he said.

UAE members selected

The conference also announced the selection of two members of the UAE delegation to hold senior positions within the conference committees. The selected members will be in charge of managing different activities, coordinating meetings, and setting the ITU strategic plan for the next four years. Nasser bin Hammad, senior manager of international affairs at the TRA was elected as vice president of the conference and Nasser Marzouqi as vice-chairman of the sixth committee responsible for overall management and administrative matters.

The conference vice-president duty is to assist in managing the working team and coordinating efforts with the conference president in various issues and topics of discussion listed on the conference agenda also providing support in consultations between the conference president and deputies in case of developments and emerging issues. Nasser bin Hammad was also elected as the official representative of the Arab Group.
