Dubai: HTC on Thursday announced that it will be starting from today pre-sales of the Nexus 9 — the first tablet to run the latest iteration of Google’s Android operating system, 5.0 Lollipop — from the Google Play Store, with shipping and availability in retail outlets beginning November 3.

Android 5.0 Lollipop — which was first unveiled at the Google I/O developers’ conference on June 25 under the codename “Android L” — is touted as “the smarts of Android on screens big and small”. Google officially named it as “Lollipop” on Wednesday.

The Lollipop operating system makes multitasking “a breeze”, while allowing for a high level of personalisation and security through a range of secure login functions, such as Smart Lock, which secures a phone or tablet with a trusted device like a wearable gadget or, according to Google, even a car. Another critical feature is that it offers extended battery life.

The Nexus 9 is the result of a close collaboration between HTC and Google, which is “a great example of what can be achieved when two companies, united in their passion for innovative technology, come together to create a product with the user experience at the very centre of the design process,” Peter Chou, chief executive officer of New Taipei-based HTC, said in a statement.

“HTC’s unrivalled design language combines with the very latest software advancements to deliver a premium tablet, inside
and out.”

As of Press time, an e-mail to HTC from Khaleej Times seeking comments went unanswered.

The HTC Nexus 9 tablet is encased in a brushed aluminium frame that connects the screen to a soft-grip back. Its 8.9-inch display has a 4:3-inch viewing ratio and has a 2K (2048 x 1536) resolution. It is powered by an Nvidia Tegra K1 64-bit dual-core processor and Keppler graphics user interface.

Its main and front cameras are 8MP and 1.6MP, respectively, and its dual front-facing speakers have a dedicated smart amplifier plus HTC BoomSound.

The Nexus 9 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 32GB LTE models.

Meanwhile, the first smartphone to run Lollipop will be the Motorola Nexus 6, which was unveiled on Wednesday and will be available for pre-order later this month.
