Consumer electronics sales set for double-digit growth

Plug Ins to expand in the capital with three more outlets.

Abu Dhabi: The consumer confidence is strong since the start of the year, as the consumer electronics sales are expected to grow close to double-digit, in the January-March quarter, a top retailer said.

The Dubai Shopping Festival ended up with very strong sales in January. However, as expected the February was a bit slower due to several factors including slightly slower Russian tourists’ arrivals in town. The sales started picking up in the days “towards end February and we are into good promotions period of the March,” said Sean Connor, the general manager of Plug Ins, a consumer electronics retailer. “So the quarter should come out well ahead of last year,” and will close with a double-digit growth year-on-year, he said, in an interview with Khaleej Times. About the mega electronics show Gitex taking place in April, the general manager was bullish, as some of the new innovations will hit the market particularly Samsung’s S6 will be available to the customers giving a big surge to revenues.

On his expansion plans, the general manager said Plug Ins will aggressively expand its outreach in the capital with three more outlets which will take the tally to six outlets, within this year. “The capital has always been a key market for us and we’ve seen a steady increase in visitor footfall to our stores located in Marina Mall, Yas Mall and Al Wadha Mall,” said Sean Connor. The new stores will be opened at Dalma Mall and other coming up malls in the emirate.

The Al-Futtaim company also has six stores Dubai Festival City, The Dubai Mall, Al-Ghurair City, Mall of the Emirates and Deira City Centre in Dubai and Al Bawadi Mall in Al Ain.

The multi-brand consumer electronics retailer is anticipating strong demand for consumer electronics products during the Abu Dhabi Electronics Shopper.

The company expects sales of consumer electronics products to increase 40 per cent driven mainly by demand for the latest smartphones and super-size TV’s – 55” and above. The General Manager said Abu Dhabi has an increasing population of consumers with medium to high disposable incomes and traditionally the big ticket items such as the latest smartphones and big size panels tend to do really well.

“We look forward to engaging with our customers and offering them the best deals on CE products and other exciting offers during the ADES,” he added.

This will be the third time in a row that Plug Ins will be participating at the ADES and visitors to the stand can expect one major deal which will be announced every hour during the shopper. In addition, on a minimum purchase of Dh1,000 and above, customers will get a chance to spin the wheel and win guaranteed prizes. There are also exclusive ‘experience’ zones for customers where they can touch and feel the product prior to purchase.
