Dubai: Fujairah’s quarry products industry is gaining attention from the GCC and beyond—with production expected to experience continuous growth in terms of volume, rising from 100 million tonnes in 2015 to 145 million tonnes by 2019. The emirate also expects to receive more than Dh25 billion in infrastructure projects in the coming five years; accompanied by an 11 per cent stock of residential units.

In addition, the construction boom in the region has played a large role in developing Fujairah’s quarry products industry, with a pipeline of construction projects that exceeds $2.5 trillion.

The UAE is the world’s third largest exporter of quarry products, with Fujairah situated at the heart of its production — catering to local and regional needs. According to MEED Ventures Onsite, the total value of construction projects either planned or under way in the UAE is $549 billion.

Two major events — the World Expo in 2020 and the Football World Cup in 2022, hosted by Dubai and Qatar respectively — will support the growth in the real estate and construction sectors — with significant contracts also coming from Kuwait, one of the region’s biggest quarry product importers.

Saudi Arabia is also a key player in the advancement of regional quarry product expansion, with a commitment to invest SAR8 billion in oil and gas and retail in Fujairah specifically. This combination of economic factors is expected to increase Fujairah’s quarry production by 8 per cent annually for the next five years.

The construction boom also has a direct impact on the role of crushers — machinery designed to cope with the toughest quarry aggregates. One of the companies meeting market needs and catering to the demand for quarry products is Fujairah-based Oryx Industries, a producer of building materials which also supplies ready-mix concrete and sources and transports quarry products.

In anticipation of the increasing demand for building materials, Oryx Industries added to its capacities by acquiring Oryx Crushers earlier this year. Since then, the firm has carried out enhancements to the newly-acquired crushers by installing primary and secondary jaw crushers from industry leader Metso (Finland).

This has allowed production capacity to reach three million tonnes annually. This expansion will give Oryx Industries a total production of eight million tonnes of quarry products per annum, about eight per cent of Fujairah’s total gabbro production in 2015.
