A total of 2.25 million passengers travelled through the airport from January to March 2014, compared to 2.08 million in the same period last year. Aircraft movements registered in the first quarter of this year reached 16,373, while freight handled for the same period recorded 51,045 tonnes. Sea-air cargo posted 7,289 tonnes.
Ali Salim Al Midfa, chairman of the Sharjah Airport Authority, said: “As the numbers clearly suggest, robust passenger traffic growth continues. This is being driven by the efficiency of procedures, excellent services and the strategic location of Sharjah International Airport.”

“In addition to the new routes and frequencies by Air Arabia — the biggest carrier in Sharjah International Airport that has a bright reputation among travellers and always offers excellent packages — new airlines that launched flights to Sharjah International Airport, additional services by existing airlines, as well as the attractiveness of Sharjah as a business hub and tourist destination [have helped].”
He noted that the ongoing projects carried out by the airport will contribute to stimulate the companies operating at Sharjah International Airport and will increase its capacity.
Al Midfa added: “It is a result of team effort; I must place on record my appreciation of the contribution of the staff at Sharjah Airport Authority, the Department of Civil Aviation and the various government entities operating here. It is their combined efforts and the efficiency of their systems that ensures services of the highest standards of quality which make our customers come back for more.”
