ADSB satellite systems for UAE Navy Baynunah ships
ABU DHABI - Abu Dhabi Ship Building Company, or ADSB, and satellite communication firm YahSat have announced the award of a contract to fit state-of-the-art satellite communications systems to the complete fleet of UAE Navy Baynunah-class corvettes.
ADSB, which builds and provides repair and refitting services for naval, military and commercial vessels will install equipment supplied by YahSat and leading communications company Rohde & Schwarz to the fleet.
Additional project technical support will be provided by CMN and Selex.
On the third day of the International Defence Exhibition and Conference, or Idex 2013, the UAE Armed Forces mandated ADSB to purchase and install satellite communication equipment on Baynunah-class ships for Dh126 million. ADSB is the prime contractor of the project and will be responsible for vessel modification and installation of the equipment.
The company is leading the region’s largest naval shipbuilding programme to construct six Baynunah-class corvettes for the UAE Navy and has added a new modern composite facility as part of its on-going business expansion programme. ADSB, which is listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, will upgrade the Baynunah-class ships in a deal worth Dh265 million.
“This contract demonstrates the synergies that exist between the defence-related companies in the wider Mubadala group of companies and the mutual benefits they create for our customers,” ADSB CEO Ian Pike said.
During Idex 2013, the UAE Armed Forces announced a deal to purchase naval defence system RAM and has signed an agreement with ADSB, which will acquire and install it on the naval ships. The value of the deal is Dh375 million.
“Network security and uninterrupted service are constant concerns for maritime customers — our solution is designed to provide connectivity and real-time data to meet their needs,” YahSat CEO Tareq Al Hosani said.
“We look forward to working closely with our partners at ADSB to provide the UAE Navy with a truly complementary service,” he added.
