Oris has built a reputation for special and limited editions that span a remarkably broad emotional and cultural spectrum. At one end are purpose-driven releases such as the Great Barrier Reef series, where watchmaking becomes a vehicle for conservation storytelling. At the other end are delightfully unexpected creations like the ProPilot X Kermit Special Edition, which showed the brand’s willingness to embrace humour and personality without undermining its mechanical seriousness. This range is precisely what makes Oris’s approach to special editions so compelling, as they are never arbitrary and always intentional.
Within this context, zodiac-inspired watches occupy a more reflective space in modern horology, lending mechanical expression to symbolism. As watchmakers around the world mark the Chinese New Year, Oris once again chooses a path of restraint. For 2026, the independent Swiss brand turns its attention to the Year of the Fire Horse, which begins on 17 February, translating its themes of energy, confidence, and forward momentum into a watch that feels emotionally charged yet mechanically disciplined.
The visual language sets the tone immediately. A deep red dial anchors the design, while the subdials introduce richer, more animated hues that lend the surface a sense of depth and movement. Rather than relying on overt ornamentation, the colour scheme does the work, suggesting heat, momentum, and inner energy. Applied indices and luminous hands bring clarity and structure, ensuring the watch remains legible despite the information it carries.

At the heart of the watch lies the hand-wound Oris Calibre 113, one of the brand’s most ambitious in-house movements. Conceived as a true business calendar, it displays the day, date, month, and week—an uncommon combination that reflects Oris’ practical yet technically confident philosophy. The week indication, traced along the outer edge of the dial, adds a layer of visual intrigue while emphasising the movement’s purpose-driven design.
The Calibre 113’s 10-day power reserve is substantial, but it is the manner in which this energy is communicated that feels particularly thoughtful. The non-linear power reserve indicator becomes more precise as the reserve diminishes, offering greater accuracy when it matters most. Framing this display are two horse motifs—one in motion, the other at rest—mirroring the state of the mainspring. It’s a poetic gesture that brings warmth and narrative to the mechanics without feeling gimmicky.
All of this is housed in a 43mm multi-piece stainless steel case that provides the necessary breathing room for the dial’s complexity. Sapphire crystals on both sides invite interaction, with the caseback offering a clear view of the movement within. Water resistance is rated at 5 bar, reinforcing the sense that this is a watch designed for everyday engagement rather than occasional ceremony. A dark brown cordovan leather strap, secured by a folding clasp, completes the composition with understated tactility and comfort.
Limited to 88 numbered pieces—a number long associated with luck and prosperity—the Oris Year of the Horse Limited Edition arrives in a wooden presentation box. More than a symbolic tribute, it is a clear statement of Oris’ character: independent in spirit, assured in mechanics, and fluent in the cultural narratives that continue to give fine watchmaking its meaning.
