Hello Cupcake!

I was having a discussion with friends about the best cupcake joints in Dubai. The two that won the day were Hummingbird Bakery and Magnolia Bakery… and even though all three of us claimed to be on a diet, we went cupcake shopping pronto. The above photo was clicked by Aruna; she’s operates BakeAru out of home in Delhi. I keep staring at the photo to keep reminding myself how my cup runneth over… each time I have a cupcake.

One for the album

I recently read Danielle Steel’s First Sight, and gagged at the perpetual lull that dogged the pages… the vapid storytelling that wouldn’t put a 3-month-old to sleep. Her disastrous writings these days made me revisit Family Album… From a time when Steel actually wrote lyrical, fleshed-out narratives. The story of Faye Price, spanning generations — and twists and turns — still has a compelling strain to it.

Spa@home

I’m always in desperate need of pampering, but too lazy to step out of the house on weekends to indulge in a relaxing ummmmmassage. Or even a mani-pedi session. So I’m immensely perked up to hear about luxuriating treatments at home by Tips & Toes@Home Service. Currently available to those who inhabit Palm Jumeirah, Dubai and Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, I’m nevertheless hopeful my part of town will soon be on the map! The treatments cost only 20 per cent more than regular in-salon prices, and include nail maintenance, eyelash extensions, waxing and invigorating massages.

I do confess

I’d mentioned a couple of weeks ago I would be watching the Hitch classic I Confess. I did. Last week. I’ve watched it earlier, on television, and then on video (when VCRs were a reality), and it sealed the love I first felt for Montgomery Clift when I’d been taken (on a rare outing) to watch From Here To Eternity (where he sort of plays second fiddle to Burt Lancaster). What intrigues me that I Confess is one of Hitchcock’s most underrated films… at least, most under-discussed. And yet, it never fails to delight me consummately. Poignant and gripping. Wholesome yet unconventional. Love it.

Grabbing Eyeballs

Aamir Khan

Claim to fame: Posing in the buff for the PK poster

Nothing succeeds like a nasty pre-release controversy in Bollywood, so Rajkumar Hirani (of Munnabhai fame) will definitely hit pay dirt when his latest flick PK hits the cinemas in December. The PK poster, featuring Aamir sans clothes, clutching a strategically-placed 2-in-1 (it’s supposed to be a rip-off of a record cover — but who cares really?), has triggered off sniggers on Twitter and angry protests from politicians who fear Aamir in the buff may have a disturbing effect on children and “families”. Our man, in his trademark style, remains unflinching.
