Did you get a 'power shock' looking at the figure in your electricity bill? Your perpetually- running air-conditioner (AC) could be the villain. With blazing heat outside, one can't think of switching off the AC even for 5 minutes. Result: It goes on and on, keeping you cool indoors until the heat gets you when you have to shell out a staggering sum for the 'pricey relief'.
Indispensability of ACs can't be denied. But there are ways to wisely tackle - and also curtail - their use.
Here are some 'tricks' that will prevent your home from becoming a sauna while bringing down your electricity consumption at the same time.

1. Control the amount of sun rays entering your home

You can lower the temperature of your home by simply closing your blinds so that less sun rays shine indoors. This may sound like an obvious fact, but the blinds do have a strong effect on the temperature in your home.

2. Let plants help you

The more plants you have around your home, typically near windows, the more sunlight will be absorbed, therefore cooling down your home. Try visiting the Dubai Garden Center before you think about going to an electronics store to buy a new AC.

3. Use a fan or make your own

Typical ceiling fans consume significantly less energy than air conditioners, and create a pleasant breeze around your home. If you don't feel like investing in a ceiling fan, you can DIY your own smaller version using Coke cans! Here's how to do it

4. Clean your AC vents

If you absolutely cannot live without having the AC on, consider getting the units properly cleaned. A dusty air conditioning unit requires a lot more power to operate compared to a clean one.

5. Cool down your bed

There are a load of state-of-the-art cooling sheets and pillows in the market, and if you want to sleep sweat-free at night, try investing in one. These will allow you to lower your AC, or maybe even turn it off, while still getting a good night's sleep.
