The Congress gave Delhi the worst possible government and as a result, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power. Arvind Kejriwal, who launched the AAP pledging to wipe out corruption, took the metro to attend his swearing-in ceremony. If the Congress or Bharatiya Janata Party had been in his place, a lot of public money would have been spent for the function. Kejriwal has also pledged to spend public money frugally and instructed his ministers and lawmakers not to be arrogant. Now the question is, can the party fulfill its election promises? Let us wait and see.

Congratulations to Arvind Kejriwal and wishing him all the best in transforming the political landscape. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has finally formed a government in Delhi, entering into a backroom deal with the Congress, known for its 15 years’ misrule and proven track record of withdrawing support to allies and causing political instability in the country. But the tremendous debut by the AAP has shown that elections can be fought and won by honesty. The AAP’s victory is good for the electoral politics of democratic India; it strengthens people’s belief in democracy when they were fast losing faith in their political leaders.

The Aam Aadmi Party heralds a new age in Indian politics, indicating principles matter more than privileged power. It can be a trend encompassing the national political spectrum. However, the scale of challenge represented by vested interests and political rivals who feel threatened by the “upstart” force should not be underestimated. Wishing Kejriwal and his band of young crusaders a successful foray into a murky domain. May truth triumph.
