Mankind has progressed. But we seem to be lacking when it comes to respecting others and even in receiving respect. I am referring to the news about students being forced to wear cardboard boxes on their heads to avoid cheating inside the examination hall (Students forced to wear cardboard boxes to avoid copying during exams, KT, Oct 19).

Although I am in no way associated with the incident I feel deeply insulted while looking at the photograph.

So where does the problem lie? In students who lack morals, in parents who failed to teach them good values, in teachers who did not instill good qualities like honesty, or in the system which has made exams extremely competitive?

Well, I feel the problem arises because parents and teachers are trying to make their wards robots.

A teacher's role in very important in society. Hence it is important that he or she becomes one by choice and not by chance. A teacher must ensure that there is all-round development among students and considerable attention should be paid to their ethical values. That is the only way to avoid unethical practices. Otherwise we will be hearing of more and more such outlandish practices
