It is appalling to know that 5.9 million children under the age of five died in 2015. More than half of the deaths could have been prevented. The rate of children dying in neo-natal period is the highest in developing countries.
Pre-term birth complications, pneumonia, birth asphyxia, infections, malaria and malnutrition are some of the causes of child mortality. The world as a whole should accelerate progress to reduce mortality rate.
Immunisation, high quality maternal and newborn care, prevention of diseases through vaccines, maternal, infant and young child nutrition, health sectors and multi-sectoral efforts and awareness about hygiene and sanitation are needed to overcome this grave issue.
