Mesmerising evening

I consider myself fortunate to have attended the 7th International Urdu Mushaira held in
Abu Dhabi recently. The theme Aman ki Asha (Hope for peace), was so evident throughout
the programme.

It was indeed a privilege to hear chaste Urdu ghazals/shayarees from eminent poets from India, Pakistan and the UAE. The quality of ghazal/ shayaree was so good that we felt that we were in the midst of a mushaira (poetry evening) in Lucknow, Aligarh, Karachi or Lahore.

The recital by Emirati Urdu poet Dr Zubair Farooq was good beyond the words.

The haunting ghazals by Mumbai’s Rana Tabassum kept the audience spell-bound. The icing on the cake, however, was the performance by Delhi’s 87-year-old Pandit Anand Mohan Gulzar Dehlawi who with his impeccable recitals mesmerised the audience. There was a thumping response from all corners of the Al Jaheli Theatre, the venue of this event. Thanks to the organisers of this beautiful event, it was a tremendous success. A splendid effort to keep alive the Urdu legacy.
