During the initial days of the mobile phone, before the start of any function, organisers would request the audience to either turn off the mobile phone or to keep it on silent mode. This gradually became the norm and then a habit and a culture among mobile users.
However, with the coming of the messaging facility like Whatsapp, there is a change. Last month I had the opportunity to attend several conferences and panel discussions, and surprisingly I noticed that more than half of the attendees were busy on their phones, reading and sending messages and browsing. This happened even as well-known speakers took to the stage. In my opinion, this is an insult to the speaker.
It is time we introduced a mobile culture and kept the phones in their pockets in silent mode.
