It pays to check the receipts every time you shop

It pays to be mindful of how we are spending and on what. In the last few weeks, I have noticed being overcharged at three to four hypermarkets because of incorrect billing. The last instance happened at a well renowned hypermarket that has a wide network of stores across all emirates.
I bought 5kg flour from the store. The display price was Dh9.50 but at the cash counter I was charged Dh11.50. It is a small amount. After I pointed the mistake to the store and raised the matter with the store manager, I was offered a refund, but I am writing to make readers aware of the discrepancies in pricing that can occur while shopping. We often have faith in computerised systems. Some of us do a counter check by tallying the number of items billed and number of items in the cart, but that is not enough.
We should pay more heed to the amount we are paying for each item. Since the stores are often introducing promotions and deals, sometimes the same isn't updated in the systems, which puts the onus on us to keep an eye on the bill. After all, it is our money. -Kailash Sajnani, Dubai
