The dominance of technology and the dilemma of choice that children are faced with regard to the usage smartphones was brought out well in your column in Diversions. With the virtual world taking over our lives through apps and social networking sites, it could be quite mind boggling and overwhelming for kids.
While adults themselves are not able to draw a line and curb its overpowering influence, it is not surprising that young minds are drawn in completely by them. As stated in the article, technology is here to stay with its myriad forms and changing applications. Therefore, it becomes necessary to guide children to differentiate between the virtual and real world, help them prioritise their time and use their discretion while choosing what they should.
They should be made to realise that the happiness derived from human affection and interaction is far more lasting and fulfilling. Even adults seem to be quite content in silencing their little ones by playing some music or turning on a mobile app when they seek to communicate their feelings and emotions. It should be a combined venture between parents and children to understand technology and its limits.
