An outbreak of the acute encephalitis syndrome in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India, has so far claimed the lives of 172 children. But the political leaders in India seem least bothered. There is no debate in parliament on this. Why? One government minister did raise the topic, but he seemed more worried about the lychee fruit trade due to the outbreak rather than health of the children. What a brazen disregard of the lives of the poor, Dalits, and the minorities.
