The issues discussed in the article Parents can be blinded by love for their kids (KT, Sept 20) were relevant and thought-provoking. Parents have a critical responsibility of training their kids to be accountable for their choices and decisions they make in their lives. Over-protection and indulgence can make them dependent and unconfident. However, maintaining a fine balance between discipline and love can teach children some invaluable lessons in life, and prepare them well for their future.
There's no point in shielding kids all the time. They should be allowed to experience positive and negative emotions, encouraged to take on challenges and try out new things. Meanwhile, parents should use their love, warmth and allow open communication to build stronger bonds with them, and allow them to soar high. Don't cast a shadow of doubt on their capabilities.
